OUR FALL MUSICALS!

Students enrolled in acting, vocal, dance, or any combination of the three disciplines are eligible to take part in our fall musicals—Shrek (two separate productions for Grades 1-4 and 5-8) and Little Women (for high school students). The musicals are offered as separate classes from our technique classes. All rehearsals and performances will take place at our theater space (75 E. Walnut Street, Long Beach). Please see information below about each show and click here to register for one of our musicals!

“Shrek”
Our Fall YOUTH Musical (Grades 1-4)

  • Eligibility: Students in grades 1-4 currently enrolled in acting, vocal, or dance classes through PYT.

  • Participation fee and costumes/script: $150/month (billed from September through January); costume fees will be billed separately, but parents will fundraise to cover costs to keep costume costs minimal. An additional $25 script fee is charged by Music Theater International, but students are permitted to keep their scripts and write in them.

  • Auditions: Auditions for grades 1-4 will take place on Sunday, 9/14 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM at PYT. Auditions will begin promptly at 11:30 AM with a brief dance call where students learn some choreography from the show. Students should be prepared to dance with comfortable clothing, water, and either jazz shoes or sneakers. After the dance call, students will sing one-by-one for our artistic team (they will not sing in front of one another). Students should prepare a 30-60 second cut of a song in the style of the show (Disney or contemporary musical theater). Please do not sing from the show. We ask that students not hold lyric sheets or sheet music while they sing. Students should be prepared to sing their song with an instrumental track (YouTube has many free karaoke tracks) that we can play on our speaker. Alternatively, students are permitted to bring sheet music for our accompanist. After a student has sung, he/she/they may call a parent to pick them up. We expect that auditions will wrap up by around 1:00 PM.

  • Callbacks: Students may choose between two dates for callbacks (they only need to attend one)—Monday, 9/15 from 5:00-8:00 PM or Thursday, 9/18 from 4:00-7:00 PM. A few hours after auditions wrap up on 9/14, all students will receive an email with callback information. Students should familiarize themselves with the material linked in that email (scenes and songs) but do not need to memorize it. We suggest that students spend some time familiarizing themselves with the show’s soundtrack over the next few weeks so that the music is not brand new to them. At callbacks, students will sing and read from the material sent home in their email. There will not be a dance callback.
*** If a student has any inflexible conflicts with the audition or callback days, please reach out to us directly so we can be sure to accommodate their needs.***

  • Casting: Casting will be announced via email on Friday, 9/19 at 4:00 PM.

  • Rehearsals: Sundays, 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM (rehearsals may be extended until 2:00 as needed) starting on Sunday, 9/21. Students will have off for holiday/vacation closings. “Little Women”
Our Fall SENIOR Musical

  • Eligibility: High school students currently enrolled in acting, vocal, or dance classes through PYT.

  • Participation fee and costumes/script: $175/month (billed from September through January); costume fees will be billed separately, but parents will fundraise to cover costs to keep costume costs minimal. • Auditions: Sunday, 9/7 from 1:30-3:30 PM @ PYT. Each actor will sing a brief song (approx. 1 minute) of their choice. Please choose a song that showcases your vocal strengths at this time, and allows for some acting moments. You will sing one-by-one in the room using either an instrumental track or piano accompaniment. We encourage you to make big choices and take risks! There will not be a dance call for this show.

  • Callbacks: Sunday, 9/14 from 2:30-5:30 PM @ PYT. We will begin promptly by hearing people read and sing. You will sing and read one at a time in the audition room - a reader will be available for you in scenes. FOR THIS AUDITION PROCESS, WE WILL NOT BE ASSIGNING ROLES FOR CALLBACKS.  Instead, please select TWO roles for which you would like to read. Callback sides for each character will be posted here no later than September 1st. We would like actors to think of their authentic selves in the world of this show and select up to two (2) characters they feel they could confidently bring to life with their current level of skill and ability. IMPORTANT- your callback selections do NOT guarantee a particular role. We promise to CONSIDER you for the roles. *** If a student has any inflexible conflicts with the audition or callback days, please reach out to us directly so we can be sure to accommodate their needs.***

  • Casting and Feedback: Our artistic staff will be filling out feedback forms for each student during the audition process. After casting concludes, students will be emailed their final feedback in the areas of singing and acting. We hope that this will help our students understand their strengths and where we see areas for growth. Casting will be announced via email on Monday, 9/15 at 4:00 PM.

  • Rehearsals: Sundays - 1:45-5:15 PM. Rehearsals may be extended as needed, and additional Saturday rehearsals will be called as needed, but we will work around students’ availability. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday, 9/21 and run through January. Students will have off for holiday/vacation closings. When rehearsals begin, we will ask for a list of any Saturday and Sunday conflicts that you have. Please double check school or studio calendars for any competitions, cabarets, or additional performances to which you’ve already committed. We want to make sure we make a schedule that allows for everyone’s availability. Thank you in advance! Mandatory tech and dress rehearsals will be held from Saturday, 1/17 through Wednesday, 1/21 (students involved with ‘All County’ concerts will be excused during their performances).
