OUR TEACHING PHILOSOPHY
Here at PYT, our goal is to create well-rounded performers with impeccable training in the three skill areas of musical theater—acting, singing, and dancing. Students can choose to take classes in one, two, or three disciplines, providing our student body with ultimate flexibility. We encourage students who wish to pursue theater in college or professionally to train in all three skill areas, and we offer a ‘triple threat discount’ for students who train in all disciplines.
Students who take technique classes with PYT (whether they are in acting, singing, dancing, or some combination of the three skill areas) are eligible to participate in our fall and spring musicals. The musicals are offered as separate classes. Our musicals are not open to students outside of PYT, so students must train in at least one technical discipline to take part in these special programs.
Our class schedule is listed below. Please take a moment to review our class descriptions and policies. Classes begin on Sunday, September 7th and run through early June.

When enrolling online, please note that the full price will be charged for the first month, but we will issue a $25 credit for that month. After the first month, you will receive the $25 discount automatically.
ONE-ON-ONE PRIVATE VOCAL LESSONS:

$100 / 60-minute lesson
30-minute lessons monthly (4 per month) - $200
45-minute lessons monthly (4 per month) - $280
60-minute lessons monthly (4 per month) - $360
SEMI-PRIVATE VOCAL LESSONS (two students):
30-minute semi privates for two students - $115/month per person
60-minute semi privates for two students - $200/month per person
(monthly prices are based on four sessions per month)
For students in middle and high school, we recommend weekly one-on-one private vocal lessons or semi-private lessons for two students at a time. Why study privately? One-on-one training provides your child with invaluable feedback and allows your child’s instructor to take a nuanced approach that is catered to your child’s individual needs. We see immeasurable growth in technical and artistic development from students who choose to study privately. Private or semi-private lessons for students in elementary school may be requested but are at the discretion of our Musical Director based on a child’s readiness.

DANCE CLASSES
At PYT, we firmly believe in creating well-rounded performers, and dance is an incredibly important puzzle piece in a child’s musical theater training. Therefore, we have partnered with our sister program, The Dance Loft, to offer our students a large variety of classes from which to choose.

We recommend that students begin their dance journey with one or more of the following dance classes:

Dance classes begin on Wednesday, September 3rd and run through Saturday, June 20th. The end-of-year recital will take place on Saturday, June 13th at the Maguire Theater (SUNY Old Westbury).

THE TRIPLE THREAT DISCOUNT
For students wishing to pursue a career in musical theater, we highly recommend training in all three skill areas (acting, singing, and dancing) in order to receive a well-rounded education. To make this more affordable, PYT is happy to offer our ‘triple threat discount’. For students training in all three disciplines, you will receive 5% off tuition which includes your child’s acting class, your child’s vocal package, and one hour of dance training per week. (Students may elect to take more dance hours per week, but only the first hour will be discounted.) This discount cannot be combined with other discounts and does not apply to participation fees in our musicals. If your child is eligible for the ‘triple threat’ discount it will be applied after a student is officially registered in all three disciplines and will appear as a credit on your second month’s invoice.
CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
PYT’s Pre-Professional Acting Classes are designed to lay the foundation for technique-based artistry through a progressive series of exercises, introduction to script analysis, and scene study/monologue work. All exercises are designed to encourage spontaneity; study real human behavior; help the actor become more sensitive, imaginative, responsive, and alive onstage; relax the actor; and bring more freedom to the work. Showcases throughout the year will provide students with ongoing performance opportunities and chances for growth. Our Pre-Professional students will work with professional actor and instructor, Mr. Nathan Costella, in their classes. ***NEW this year! Every 4-8 weeks we will hold MASTER CLASS DAY where students work in their Pre-Professional Acting class with NYC guest professionals on special topics! This will enhance students’ versatility and exposure to different techniques and perspectives in theater.***
PYT’s Vocal Classes and Private Lessons are designed to provide a solid technical foundation for a student’s developing voice. Exercises help students with breathing, support, posture, tone creation, placement of sound, range, blending between registers to eliminate vocal breaks, endurance, and control. Students will also work with our faculty on coaching musical theater repertory, thereby expanding their ‘book’ of songs. Vocal cabarets throughout the year will provide students with ongoing performance opportunities and chances for growth. Private vocal lessons are recommended for older pre-teens and teens as curriculum can be customized to the student’s developing voice. Group vocal classes are a great option for younger students to develop their fundamentals. Classes and lessons are taught by PYT’s Associate Director and Head Musical Director, Dr. Lauren Barchi, and Musical Director, Mr. Tom Riley.
PYT’s Dance Classes are offered through our sister program, The Dance Loft. We highly recommend that students develop proficiency in ballet, tap, and jazz. Students also have the option of taking classes in lyrical, modern, hip-hop, and acro. Students can expect to improve their flexibility, agility, balance, rhythmic awareness, and ability to pick up choreography quickly—all essential qualities in a well-rounded musical theater actor. Classes are taught by current and retired professional dancers. Students will have the option to participate in The Dance Loft’s annual end-of-year recital to showcase the skills they’ve acquired throughout the year. This will take place on Saturday, June 13th at the Maguire Theater (SUNY Old Westbury).
PYT’s Broadway Babies Class is intended for our future stars! Through imaginative games, improvisation using play, and basic scene work, students will gain an excellent introduction to the art of acting. Students will also begin to develop their voices through foundational vocal work and will gain an understanding of basic dance and movement. This is the perfect class for young students showing an interest in the performing arts! This class will be taught by PYT’s Director (and retired musical theater performer), Ms. Brooke Robyn Dairman. Students will perform at our Spring Cabaret in May!
PYT’s Musicals are full-length productions that provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they’ve mastered in their technique classes. Directed, musical directed, and choreographed by top pros in the field, students are taught about professional musical theater standards so that those who wish to pursue higher education or a future career in the performing arts are fully prepared. We maintain the highest standards for lighting, sound, scenic design, costumes, and all elements of theater that contribute to a beautifully-executed production. Once students have participated in a PYT musical, they are hooked! Our Senior Spring Musical, Sweeney Todd, will be directed by Mr. Nathan Costella and musical directed by Dr. Lauren Barchi. Our Junior Spring Musical, A Chorus Line, will be directed and choreographed by Ms. Brooke Robyn Dairman and musical directed by Mr. Tom Riley. Our Youth/Junior Spring Musical, Descendants, will be under the direction of the same team. Our Spring Performance Season will run throughout May and June at our very own PYT Ballroom Theater.
***PYT reserves the right to admit younger students of exceptional ability to any class.
Our staff will make all determinations based upon the focus, maturity, and experience of each individual student.***
